Social Skills Group

What is a social skills club?

​The groups are developed for any child at risk for a social communication skills delay: mild to severe and/or any child who has difficulty interacting with peers, responding to social cues, or using language to navigate through their environment effectively.

What do you teach in social skills group?

1. Social Communication Skills

  • Greetings & introductions: saying hello, using names

  • Conversational skills: taking turns, staying on topic

  • Using polite language: please, thank you, sorry

  • Asking and answering questions appropriately

2. Play & Interaction Skills

  • Sharing and taking turns during play

  • Cooperative play: working together on games or activities

  • Understanding group rules and following directions

  • Inviting others to play or join activities

These groups are arranged according to chronological age

General Prerequisites for a Social Skills Group:

1. Developmental Readiness

  • Can attend to an adult or facilitator for short periods.

  • Able to engage with toys, activities, or peers in a structured setting.

  • Shows interest in interacting with other children.

2. Communication Skills

  • Can express needs or feelings through speech or gestures

  • Able to follow simple directions (e.g., “come here,” “sit down”).

3. Emotional & Behavioural Readiness

  • Can tolerate being with a group for short periods without distress.

  • Can wait for a turn or follow basic group routines with support.

  • Does not display dangerous or aggressive behaviours that could harm self or others.

4. Social Interest

  • Shows curiosity about other children or adults.

  • Willing to participate in group activities, even with prompts or guidance.

5. Parent / Caregiver Support

  • Caregivers are able to attend initially or provide reinforcement at home.

  • Open to collaboration with facilitators to support skill development.
